Apple Mac are particularly brilliant at their snazzy graphics but they are also awesome at organising your programs, files, documents etc and allowing you to customise everything so your Mac is exactly how you want and need it. So if you are someone who thrives in controlled chaos or love everything to be OCD neat than these are the computers for you!
In this Mac tutorial you are going to learn how to edit your Mac Windows side bar to make sure you have all your important folders conveniently at your finger tips…
When you open up a New Finder window your will noticed that the first blue column labeled ‘Favourites’ houses all of your most used folders and handy features – All Files, Air Drop, Applications, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music and Pictures.
How to Customise Mac Window Sidebar
▪ You may wish to add another handy folder to your Finder sidebar. This is easy peasy!
To do it just drag the file you wish to upgrade to sidebar status over to the Favourites section. A horizontal line should appear to indicate a potential position. Once you are happy with its new location just let go of your click and drop the folder into place.
▪ Alternatively you may feel there is some dead weight clogging up your windows sidebar.
To remove any folders you no longer need to have easy access to, complete the following… Highlight the folder by clicking on it, then simply drag it out of the Windows sidebar. Your folder should disappear in a dramatic puff of smoke. You can also delete a folder from your sidebar by right clicking on the icon you wish to remove and then choosing the option ‘Remove from Sidebar’.
Don’t worry you are only deleting and demoting the folder from your window sidebar. The original folder will remain intact and unharmed on your Mac.
▪ If you fancy performing some feng shui and rearranging your folders you can do this by selecting the icons with a click and dragging them to a new position and order.
▪ If you find your sidebar a bit bulky and ugly you even have the opportunity to hide it.
To do this just click on and grab hold of the vertical bar (the one separating the sidebar from the rest of the window) and pulling it all the way over to the left of the window. If you find you miss the sidebar and can’t live without it then simply click and drag the left side of your Finder window over to the right. This will reveal the sidebar again.
You can even go one step further with your customisation and modify your Finder window’s sidebar preferences.
1.) Click the Finder tab in your main toolbar
2.) From the drop down menu select Preferences to open up your Finder preferences.
3.) Next click on the sidebar icon at the top to get it to display its preferences.
4.) You will see a long list of all the possible folders you can have immediately displayed in your window sidebar. Put a tick in the checkboxes next to all the icons you wish to keep in your Favourites, Shared, and Devices lists.
